Giving to Hoosac
ABOUT THE ANNUAL FUND
by Richard Lomuscio
Headmaster
Many people have only the vaguest idea of what an annual fund is. I have often said that it is like a checking account: it covers the day-to-day expenses of running the school. Tuition does not pay the full fare of a students education; the annual fund bridges the gap between tuition and the remaining balance in our operating budget.
Among other things, it helps to pay for:
- Teachers' salaries
- Maintenance of the buildings
- Maintenance of the athletic fields
- Field trips
It is the single most important fundraising tool of the school. It is the reason Hoosac can do what it can do in its unique way - all the time. And it directly benefits the daily life of a Hoosac student.
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU WANT TO
GIVE TO HOOSAC?
Below are seven reasons, and that's not all of them.
- Hoosac remains decidedly small for two, very good reasons: it will not compromise its unremitting focus on the individual, and it will not make diffuse its deep-seated traditions.
- It is a school wherein the faculty is in concert with both the rhythms of the school's general program and with those of a variety of adolescents.
- Its student body is diverse, not because that is the current political climate, but because it is in keeping with its founder's principles.
- The high quality of its academic and athletic programs is evident in its 100% college acceptance, as well in the fact that many graduates compete in collegiate sports.
- It links the past with the present, its traditions with its commitment to preparing its students for the world of today.
- It shepherds the needy, rewards excellence, fosters confidence, and guards the truth.
- It makes sense.
WAYS TO GIVE TO THE ANNUAL FUND
- Cash: This is the easiest way to give to Hoosac School. Don't forget that all donations are tax deductible.
- Credit Card: Just call the school at (518) 686-7331 and we will be glad to assist you.
- The Stock Transfer: You may transfer stocks to the Hoosac account. Simply send us a letter informing us of what you are transferring and the approximate value. Then contact the school for our brokers name, phone and account numbers.
- Gifts-in-kind: These are tangible gifts to the school. They are contributions for which Hoosac would ordinarily have to pay from its Annual Fund.
WAYS TO GIVE OUTSIDE OF THE ANNUAL FUND
- The Reverend Meredith B. Wood Foundation: Named after The Reverend Meredith B. Wood, Hoosac's Rector-Headmaster from 1941 – 1957, this Foundation originated in late 1999 in order to provide scholarships to current Hoosac students who are the embodiment of those qualities Father Wood instilled in his students.
- The Endowment Fund: Giving to this fund helps to ensure the school's future. It is money set aside, like a savings account, to protect the school during times of economic instability. Hoosac has never relied on its endowment to boost its annual giving.
- The Bruce MacRury Memorial Fund: Established in memory of Bruce MacRury '68, the proceeds from this fund will go toward enriching our Dramatic Arts Program. Under the directorship of Ashton Crosby, Bruce became one Hoosac's most memorable actors.
- The Ann Gray Parshall Memorial Lecture Series: Seeded by Trustee William Parshall in memory of his wife, this fund is designed to underwrite a lecture series, enabling the school to invite eminent guest speakers in a variety of fields.
- Planned Giving: The Wotkyns Society. Naming Hoosac in your will is a splendid way to make a substantial contribution that might not be possible during your lifetime. It is the simplest and most frequent form of a planned gift. Distributions can be made either as a specified dollar amount or as a percent of your estate. Money donated to The Wotkyns Society is appropriated for the Endowment Fund. Click here to download the Wotkyns Society enrollment form.
- A Living Trust: You can establish a trust in Hoosac's name, receiving an income from that trust until you are deceased, at which point Hoosac would receive the principle.
